The GEM Fellowship may address both concerns. It combines graduate financial support with access to employers, universities, and paid summer internships, making it especially valuable for students who want a technical career in industry, research, or academia.
However, the GEM Fellowship is not simply a scholarship application. Candidates must coordinate fellowship requirements, graduate admissions, recommendations, and potential employer matching. Understanding those moving parts early can help you submit a stronger, complete application.
What Is the GEM Fellowship?
The National GEM Consortium offers fellowships for students pursuing eligible master’s and doctoral degrees in engineering and applied science fields. Depending on the award category and degree level, support may include tuition and required fees, a stipend, and paid summer internships with a GEM employer member.
GEM fellowships are portable only among participating GEM Member Universities. Receiving admission from a member university does not automatically guarantee that the institution will confirm funding for a particular fellow. Applicants should communicate with the university’s GEM representative and the relevant graduate department before making enrollment decisions.
Employer-sponsored fellows also accept an important professional commitment. Master’s fellows generally complete internships during the summers following selection until their degree requirements are finished. Employer-sponsored doctoral fellows normally complete at least one internship, usually during the summer immediately following selection.
Who Should Apply?

- Attending an eligible in-person program, because GEM does not fund online programs

The current application information lists a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale for the MS program and 3.0 for PhD applicants. Meeting a minimum does not make selection automatic. Do not apply solely because the financial package sounds attractive. The employer relationship and internship obligation are central parts of the program. What Does the Application Require?
The application is completed through the eGEM system. For the 2027 fellowship cycle, the portal opened July 1, 2026, and closes November 13, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Because dates and requirements can change, confirm the official GEM Fellowship application process and schedule before submitting anything.
A complete application generally includes:
- Personal, educational, employment, and research information
- A current resume
- Unofficial college transcripts
- A statement of purpose of at least one page
- Contact information for three recommenders
- At least two recommendations submitted through the application system by the deadline
- Responses to questions about the GRE, whether or not you have taken it
The GRE is not universally required by GEM, but individual graduate programs may require or consider it. Check the policies of every university and department on your list rather than relying only on the fellowship’s requirements.
Apply to Graduate Schools at the Same Time
One common mistake is treating the GEM application and graduate admission as a single process. They are separate. In most cases, applicants must apply directly to at least three GEM Member Universities and to relevant STEM departments by each program’s deadline, but no later than January 15.
An exception may apply if you are already enrolled and matriculating in an eligible program at a current member university and that institution agrees in writing to support you as a GEM Fellow. Do not assume the exception applies without confirmation.
Select universities strategically. Look beyond name recognition and consider faculty research, available laboratories, degree prerequisites, location, departmental funding, internship flexibility, and whether the university can confirm GEM support. A balanced list should include programs that genuinely fit your goals rather than three schools chosen merely to satisfy the requirement.
How to Prepare a Competitive Application
Start with a focused career story
Your statement of purpose should connect your past preparation, intended graduate study, and future contribution. Instead of saying that you have “always loved science,” describe the project, technical problem, internship, or experience that shaped your interests. Explain what you want to study, why an advanced degree is necessary, and what type of work you hope to perform afterward.
GEM also matches qualified applicants with employer needs. Be ready to discuss the practical value you bring to an organization. Preparing a concise explanation is similar to answering why an employer should hire you effectively: connect your technical skills and experiences to problems the organization needs to solve.
Strengthen your resume with evidence
A technical resume should show results, not just responsibilities. Include research, capstone projects, laboratory techniques, programming languages, publications, presentations, internships, employment, leadership, and relevant service. Whenever possible, state what you designed, analyzed, improved, tested, or discovered.
Choose recommenders who know your work
A detailed recommendation from a professor, research supervisor, or technical manager is generally more useful than a vague endorsement from someone with an impressive title. Ask whether the person can provide a strong recommendation, and make the request several weeks before the deadline.
Give each recommender your resume, transcript, statement draft, deadline, and a short summary of work completed under their supervision. Although GEM requests three recommenders, at least two must submit the online recommendation by the application deadline. Monitor the portal rather than assuming every recommendation has arrived.
Prepare for employer contact
Eligible applicants may be contacted for interviews by GEM employer members. Review your projects and practice explaining them to both technical and nontechnical listeners. Be prepared to discuss your research interests, preferred work environments, geographic flexibility, teamwork, problem-solving approach, and summer availability.
